PROFESSIONAL TEETH CLEANING
Looking to have a beautiful smile that will last a while? Mclean Teeth can help you with that! Maintaining your smile can be challenging, yet it is significant for your overall health and wellbeing. Getting regular professional cleanings from a Registered Dental Hygienist will help you achieve that beautiful, healthy, and long-lasting smile you are striving for.
Dental Hygiene Assessment
On your first visit at McLean Teeth Dental Hygiene Care you will fill out a medical and dental history that we will review together to ensure nothing in your general medical or dental health would contraindicate dental hygiene treatment. In some situations, medical clearance must be obtained by your physician or specialist prior to your treatment to protect your general health. At every subsequent visit your medical and dental histories will be reviewed.
Complete Dental Hygiene Exam
During your dental hygiene assessment you will also have a thorough intra oral and extra oral examination including a visual and palatable oral cancer screening. If any abnormalities are found, proper referrals to various medical and dental health professionals will be made so abnormalities can be further assessed and treated if need be. Dental charting, including measurements of the health of your gums, and the recording of any existing restorations or enamel defects, is completed and details are recorded in the patient’s chart. The information obtained assists us in preparing a treatment plan to meet your specific oral health needs.
Customized Oral Hygiene Instruction and Education
After your dental hygiene assessment, a personalized treatment plan will be discussed and determined by both the dental hygienist and the patient to help achieve the best results. Your treatment plan will include education on various treatments, instructions, risk factors, benefits, counselling; which may include oral cancer awareness, smoking cessation, nutrition based on oral health, etc,. A treatment plan addressing the patient's goals and a recommended sequence of visits will be specially designed to meet each and every ones needs.
Teeth Cleaning (Scaling)
Scaling is the process of removing calculus from the teeth and below the gum line. Calculus is the hardened deposit that cannot be removed by brushing or flossing. During your professional teeth cleaning, the hygienist uses a combination of hand instruments and ultrasonic instruments that spray water to remove these deposits. By removing these deposits, the hygienist is providing therapy to your gums, to prevent or help treat forms of gum inflammation. See Professional Teeth Whitening for more information.
Polishing
After removing the hard and soft deposits from the teeth, the hygienist removes stain that has formed on the teeth surface. This stain is removed by using a combination of hand instruments, ultrasonic instruments and a polishing paste and a rubber cup polisher. The bacteria contained in plaque is responsible for tooth decay. Stain that is embedded within the teeth can often be lightened by professional teeth whitening.
Desensitizer
Applying topical agents will provide relief to patients from everyday pain and sensitivity. For patients that are experiencing gum sensitivity during cleaning, we can apply an anesthetic gel around the selected tooth. The anesthetic solution is delivered below the gum line using an applicator (NOT a needle) to make the treatment more comfortable.
Fluoride treatments
Fluoride is applied to protect teeth by increasing the strength of the enamel. Beneficial to all as a preventative treatment. Even more important for those with a higher risk for decay, such as children, the elderly, those on medications causing a dry mouth, and those with gum recession or sensitivity.
